Living in Ghana

Ghana is a very open  and welcoming country. Everyone from anywhere is welcome to Ghana. It is a stable democracy and reputed to be the safest in West Africa. 

SECURITY

There are police stations all over the country to help assure you of your safety. The University of Cape Coast also has a police post in addition to its own internal security force.

But as like anywhere else in the world, every country has its fair share of dangerous places and persons and you are also expected to take reasonable steps to ensure your own personal safety.

HEALTH

The University hospital offers full specialist services and has experienced personnel to take care of all your needs. UCC also has a special relationship with the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital to handle referrals should the need arise.

Groceries : The wide variety of shops, department stores and markets will certainly  meet all your grocery needs. In case you want a mall-shopping experience you could make the quick one-hour trip to the Takoradi Mall/

Financial services :There are  a wide range of financial services including international  banks, money transfer organsations, ATMs etc.  

Internet connectivity: There is free internet connectivity for students and you can get your Wi-Fi connections at vantage points all over campus. The ultramodern Sam Jonah Library with its huge volume of books, periodicals and materials is also available for your use.

Ghanaians are generally known to be very hospitable and welcoming but there are a few etiquettes you must know about Ghanaian culture

-          Do not stare at people

-          Do not take pictures without permission

-          Do not give or take things with your left hand

-          Approach people by first greeting

Clothing The weather is mostly humid all year round so it is advisable that your wardrobe is mostly consisted of light clothing.

Transport :One thing you would love about Ghana is the ease with which you can find transportation virtually everywhere. There are brightly coloured taxis you can find  that are plying regular routes or available on charter basis. These taxis will take you literally anywhere and can be found almost anytime.

Religion

The University upholds the principle of religious tolerance and thus there are numerous religious movements on campus organised under the Catholic, Protestant and Muslim  Chaplaincies. Church Services are often held between 6am and 12 on Sundays while the Moslem Services are held on Fridays at 1pm.
